LULAC FOCUSED ON MASSIVE GET- OUT-THE-VOTE AND THE CENSUS COUNT
DALLAS – The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is encouraging the Latino community in North Texas to register to vote and get counted in the 2020 Census. LULAC District III and Council 4782 are hosting a Lowrider Cruise from Grand Prairie to Dallas communities to remind citizens that early voting starts this next Tuesday, October 13, 2020 and that the 2020 Census has been extended to October 30, 2020.
“We need to get out like never before and take action if we want the voices of Juan and Maria to be heard,” says Domingo Garcia, LULAC National President. “We have been the political piñatas long enough. Now it’s time we decide for ourselves how we want to be counted and treated. Latinos have the numbers to show their power but only when we remind our leaders we’re here and when we go vote,” he adds.
The intense get-out-the-vote campaign is being made possible through a micro-grant award that Council 4782 was awarded from LULAC National as an incentive to be creative and get the word out.
The Get-Out-the-Vote & 2020 Census cruise will be held on Sunday, October 11, 2020. A Press Conference will take place at 2602 Beltline Road at the Grand Prairie ISD Parking lot at 12:15PM. Invited VIP guests include: The Mayors of Dallas and Grand Prairie plus City Council Members of both cities. Also invited are the Dallas County Judge and all Dallas County Commissioners.
Organizers said the ride starts immediately afterward and will wind its way through Oak Cliff , West Dallas, Downtown (Klyde Warren Park), Reverchon Park, Love Field and culminate at Bachman Lake, Northwest Highway.
“2020 is a decisive year for Latina empowerment when women in America are the ones deciding the outcome of who is elected for President of the United States,” said Sindy Benavides, LULAC National Chief Executive Officer. “Also, campaigns like this one are where the power of LULAC truly comes from as every council and every member. We actively engage family, friends and neighbors in exercising the greatest freedoms of our democracy by being taken into account in our country,” she adds.
The cruise will only drive along the designated streets (see below) and not make any stops in compliance with Covid-19 safety precautions and local ordinances. “The main objective is to remind citizens to exercise their right to vote and know that in close elections, every vote matters,” says Dr. Elba Garcia, Dallas County Commissioner. “What I love about this event is that it emphasizes family, cultural unity and what we can do when we work together. Nothing can stop us,” adds Garcia.
LULAC District III Director, Bryan Parra acknowledges that Latino voters are energized and ready to act. “The issues before us are historic and so is the potential impact we can make,” he says. “We have an opportunity like never before to show Latinos are united and showing our strength at the ballot box,” adds Parra.

- Census Live at Morelias Restaurant 75217, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
- Census Live at Rio Bravo Grand Prairie 75051, 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Dallas County Counts launches “Time’s Up to Stand Up. Get Counted” Campaign with Census Day
DALLAS—With seven days to go until the Sept. 30 deadline to respond to the 2020 U.S. Census, Dallas County Counts—a partnership that comprises Dallas County, the cities within it and various community organizations—launched a campaign that will redouble outreach efforts to get an accurate count of the county’s population.
“Times Up to Stand Up. Get Counted” is a seven-day campaign that began on Wednesday, September 23, to increase the Census count in Dallas County. At this time, the county self-response rate has reached 62.9% despite the interruption of Census outreach activities in early spring to curtail the spread of COVID-19.
“We have been working on spreading the word about the Census for months, but now is the time to really step up and answer,” said Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia at the news conference for Census Day. “There are billions of dollars at stake in federal funding for programs that so many in our community depend on for life-saving health care, for education that opens doors, for infrastructure that keeps our economy running and many other resources.”
Commissioner Garcia was joined in person at the news conference by representative from the city of Dallas Ed Turner, 2020 Census Coordinator; George Tang, managing director of Educate Dallas at Communities Foundation of Texas; and Bryan Carter, senior pastor at Concord Church. Other representatives from Dallas County, the City of Dallas, surrounding cities and organizations that have participated in the Census campaign joined virtually.
During the next seven days, groups will continue to canvass areas that have been traditionally hard to count to answer questions and correct misinformation that may keep residents from filling out the Census. Canvassing will take place in the following locations:
- Sept. 23: 5:30-8 p.m., District 13: Jamestown Park, 12601 Jamestown Road, Dallas, 75230
- Sept. 23: 5pm-7:45pm., District 4: Clinton P. Russell ES, 3031 S Beckley Ave, Dallas, TX 75224
- Sept 23: 5pm-7:45pm., District 5: Janie C Turner Recreation Center, 6424 Elam Rd, Dallas, TX 75217
Dates and times for other canvassing locations are available upon request.
There will be coordination with partners to set up Census Live events and kiosks at bazaars, restaurants and churches to provide information and Wifi access to fill out the Census. Some of the Census Live events on Sept. 23 will take place at:
- Census Live at Morelias Restaurant Dallas 75217, 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
- Census Live at Rio Bravo Grand Prairie 75051, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Dates, times and locations for other Census Live events are available upon request.
“Our final push is designed to activate every partnership we have with elected officials, businesses and non-profits who understand how important the Census count is to the funding and representation we deserve in North Texas. For the next ten years business growth decisions will be made in part on Census data. It’s essential join us in rallying Dallas County residents.,” said Sophia Johnson, owner and CEO of Alpha Business Images, the marketing firm leading the outreach efforts for the Dallas County Counts campaign.
Johnson added that as part of the seven-day campaign, phone banks and an enhanced social media campaign will carry the message that residents still have time to fill out the Census form. This will ensure that Dallas County gets the funds, resources and representation it deserves by having an accurate count in the decennial census.
It takes only a few minutes to fill out the forms online at www.2020census.gov, on the phone by calling 844-330-2020 or by completing the paper form that was sent to most households and returning it by mail. The Census should include all those living in the country regardless of circumstances. All information provided though the U.S. Census is confidential and secure or the next 70 years and details cannot be shared with any other government agency under penalty of law.
The data from the U.S. Census is used to determine the allocation of hundreds of billions of dollars in federal funds and resources for more than 100 programs, including Medicaid, Head Start, block grants for community mental health services, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The data is also used to adjust or redraw electoral districts, which could increase representation.
“The decennial count is one of the most important ways in which all of us can make a difference in our communities, and it’s time for us to stand up and get counted before Sept. 30,” Johnson said.
